One of my customer has asked me if he could check his e-mail when he is overseas employing a USB thumb drive or drive. I suspect Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express isn’t likely as they have tons of entries in the Registry. Searched for a few third-party software and found a few

1> Transportable Thunderbird 1.0.7

2> Tech-Pro POP3 Friend –

Tech-Pro POP3 Pal 1.12 description
POP3 Pal is a mail client for people on the move. It provides an easy way to access your POP3 mail from any Windows-based PC. It can also be used for mailbox maintenance – for example, to delete an unwanted large message that is blocking access to your other email.
POP3 Pal lets you read and reply to mail directly from your POP3 server. It supports unlimited accounts or profiles, so you can check your mail on any number of POP3 mailboxes. A “Check All” option lets you see at a glance which of your accounts have waiting messages. The optional spam check shows you messages that are likely to be spam. You can delete all the messages marked as spam with a couple of mouse clicks.
POP3 Pal Message Composer lets you reply to messages and send new mail using an available SMTP relay host. Copies can be sent to your POP3 server so that you retain the complete “thread” of correspondence when you download the messages into your usual mail client back home..
POP3 Pal has many special features that are rare or unique in this class of software:
supports HTML formatting (for received and sent mail);
supports attachments, including inline images;
spam checking option;
integrated address book;
supports POP3 APOP and SMTP authentication;
all settings stored on a portable .INI file;
small enough to fit on a floppy.
You can try POP3 Pal free of charge. In evaluation mode its use is restricted to a single POP3 account (profile) and every message you create carries a small advertisement. Registration provides unlimited accounts and removes the advertisement.

3> I.Scribe / InScribe

i.Scribe is an portable and cross platform e-mail client for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X with some PIM functionality.

Scribe comes in a freeware version: i.Scribe, which is limited to one account and 5 user defined filters[1] and a commercial version: InScribe. The commercial version adds unlimited accounts and user defined filters.

Originally released as freeware in 1999, i.Scribe was released and renamed as a commercial product InScribe in 2003. Development of both software continues from the same source. Version 2.0 of the software is slated to include a rewrite of the mail database back end [2]. Either product is sometimes referred to as just ‘Scribe’.

Scribe uses the HTML layout engine from Lgi that is virus safe. Executable attachments are detected and optionally deleted. Translators have added translations to many popular European and East Asian languages. Scribe uses Unicode internally and can display text correctly even if the glyphs are not available in the current font.

Ideal for USB flash drive, CD, or even floppy disk!

JBMail runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP. Although there is no direct Linux/UNIX support yet, JBMail runs nearly perfectly under Wine v20041201 (even with SSL/TLS connections).

Who is it for?

*

ROAD WARRIORS and MOBILE USERS who benefit from a streamlined mail client that leaves mail on the server and which doesn’t force them to download all mail (saving time and bandwidth). The program itself is self-contained and portable, and does not require installation.
*

SECURITY CONSCIOUS PROFESSIONALS who benefit from a clean, simple mail client that doesn’t expose them to the security and privacy risks posed by HTML mail and script support. Attachments are decoded on demand only, ensuring that viruses are not automatically unleashed. HTML is never rendered, so advertisers can not track messages.
*

USERS OF REMOTE SERVICES who require a properly implemented, yet easy to use SSL/TLS client for encrypted POP3 and SMTP transactions. Encrypted mail access is becoming the standard for business, academic, and government mail services.
*

I.T. PROFESSIONALS who receive an excessive volume of daily mail and need powerful filtering capabilities. With direct mailbox access on the server, users can quickly clean and take care of incoming mail to reduce or even eliminate local mail storage. Easy access to multiple profiles makes managing many accounts easy.

Who is it not for?

*

People who find everything they need (speed, security, convenience) in their current mail client.
*

People who expect many flashy features at their fingertips. JBMail is designed to be compact and secure, and the design goals may create inconveniences for some users.
