Delete Wrong Programs From List Of Recommended Programs In Open With Window
You must have noticed that, if you open a file using a wrong program, the program with which you have opened the file, automatically gets added to the list of recommended programs. This is because, Windows remembers that the file is been opened once using the program. Once added, the program remains in the list of recommended programs forever.
For Example, if you open the file “test.003” using Adobe accidentally although it actually needs to be opened in Notepad, you will notice that Adobe gets added to the list of recommended programs in the “Open With” Window for all files having an extension “.003”.
However, you may remove such wrong programs from the list of recommended programs by using a simple registry trick. Follow the below mentioned steps.
- Go to the Start Menu and select “Run”. Type in “regedit” and press “Enter” to open the Registry Editor.
- You need to navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\[file extension]\OpenWithList
[file extension] above corresponds to the file extension for which you wish to remove/delete the wrong program from recommended programs list. For instance, is you wish to remove/delete the wrong program from recommended programs list for the extension “.003” you need to look for that particular extension.
- Within the right window pane, search for the registry key with its value data matching the wrong program that you need to delete. Once found, right-click on the key and choose the option “Delete” to remove the program. Incase of the above example, you need to delete the key having value data “AcroRd32.exe”.
- Exit the Registry Editor.
After you are done with the procedure, try to open any file with the extension for which you have just deleted the wrong program. You will see that the wrong program no more appears in the list of recommended programs within the “Open With” Window.
