Adobe Concedes In The Battle Between Flash And HTML5

Adobe Flash has long been the primary application used for web graphics, videos, interactive web pages, and more. With the recent development of smart phones Adobe began working vigorously to provide an acceptable Flash player however it has been a long and troubled road for them.

Adobe has been competing with HTML5 as the dominant graphics platform for smart phones however they were fighting a losing battle. HTML5 was by far the superior contender in the battle and Adobe finally conceded here recently.

In a statement about their recent decision regarding Flash for mobile devices Adobe said this:

“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations.”

So why exactly did Adobe cease attempting to optimize Flash for mobile devices? Let’s take a look at the key reasons:

  1. HTML5 was superior – Adobe Flash simply did not work well on mobile devices despite the extensive amount of time Adobe put into working on it. HTML5 arrived a year before Flash and was still providing superior performance results than Flash.
  2. Flash lost support – Many people remember Steve Job’s message about Flash. Jobs stated Apple would cease working with Adobe and the Apple products would be using HTML5 instead of Flash. For Adobe this was a huge blow and the repercussions of Jobs’ decision were a determining factor in Adobe ceasing their work with Flash for mobile devices.
  3. HTML5 wasn’t owned by any company – While Flash was losing support HTML5 continued to gain significant support not only because it was superior but also because it wasn’t owned by a single company. Some of the biggest names in the internet world have switched over to HTML5 along with Apple including: YouTube, Twitter, CloudReader, Vimeo, Vudu, Pandora, SlideShare, and now even Adobe itself is working with HTML5.

The switch was a smart move for Adobe due to the fact that HTML5 is simply superior in almost every way for mobile devices. Now that HTML5 is fully supported by some of the biggest companies, web developers and publishers can rejoice and smart phone users can now expect to see far superior devices sometime in the near future.

Why YouTube Is Staying With Flash Rather Than HTML5… For Now.

In an earlier post I discussed why Apple announced it would no longer be working with Adobe. To sum it up, Apple disliked Adobe Flash player for a variety of reasons. In Apple’s word’s Flash player had constant issues, was a closed system, and alternative solutions allowed web developers more options while allowing consumers to view web media without having to rely on a third party plug-in. Instead of choosing to stick with Flash, Apple is now relying on JavaScript, CSS, and the new HTML5. Unfortunately not everyone is cutting the cord from Flash and moving on.

One of the largest and most well-known video compilation websites is YouTube. Millions upon millions of people use YouTube each day and viral videos make it a great place for anyone looking for a few laughs. Here recently there has been a great movement to switch from Flash over to HTML5. YouTube, however, has decided to not make the leap over to HTML5…yet.

Since HTML5 is still a work in progress, it has a lot of issues that need to be fixed before it is a widely used by all browsers. It is for these reasons that YouTube has also not made the switch over. A big issue with HTML5 is that there are significant differences reported when viewing videos. YouTube has a trail session running for HTML5 and when you run the same video on it you can tell that HTML5 does not have as high of a quality as regular Flash. I tried it myself and noticed a difference in video quality when viewing HD, but didn’t see any difference in time delay which was also noted amongst other users.

On top of the lesser video quality and reported delays, there is also no set codec standard. Since there are users uploading video constantly, YouTube wants to minimize the amount of codecs it has to support. Then there are the limitations. HTML5 does not allow users to upload directly from YouTube’s built-in video recording software. The final issue with HTML5 issue is that YouTube wants to protect its Digital Rights so that no one is able to copy and spread the videos all throughout the web without the owner’s consent.

Despite YouTube’s current reluctance they are still waiting for HTML5. With their HTML5 trial running right now, YouTube is sticking with Flash, but is preparing for HTML5 in the near future along with all the other browsers.

Did Adobe Split From Apple Or Vice Versa?

There is always a lot of controversy when it comes to smart phones, what operating system they use, which ones are better, and why. The latest trending topic is the rift that has occurred between Adobe and Apple.

Both of these multimedia electronic giants have been working together in an attempt to create a Flash player able to run on the iPhone. Unfortunately, as reported by Apple, Adobe promised a working version of Flash for the iPhone about two years ago, but has not delivered any results.

The problem with Flash is that it is unreliable and has constant issues. Adobe claims that without the Flash player, Apple users will be devastated at the lack of videos they can view on their devices. Unfortunately for Adobe, Apple has already found a solution.

Apple put their thoughts about Adobe Flash in a sixteen hundred word post on their site. To sum it up, Apple claims that Flash is a closed system and that Flash is outdated and unusable for Apple products. Apple is now going to use HTML5, CSS and JavaScript rather than Flash player. HTML5 gives more options for web developers and allows consumers to view graphics, animations and other media on the web without using a third party plug-in. You can read the full post on Apples thoughts on their website.

In response to the post on Apple’s site, Kevin Lynch (Adobe CTO) replied with a blog post as well. In his post he basically responded that Adobe will be working with Android smartphones and they will also be working with RIM, Palm, Microsoft, Nokia and others. Adobe is now going to take their toys elsewhere because Apple doesn’t want to play nice.

So what does this mean for Apple users? Good news in fact. HTML5 is a sophisticated web browsing tool that will make it much smoother and easier for Apple consumers to browse on their iPhones. Also HTML5 is newer and more advanced than Adobe and it opens up a lot of opportunities for web developers to make smart phone use better than ever.

Now back to the original question: Did Adobe split from Apple or vice versa? From the looks of things, and order of posts, it seems that Apple actually cut the ties with Adobe, just Adobe made it more official and clearly stated they will not be working with Apple. Although who cares who split first? Good thing is that now Adobe will be working hard to develop a better Flash player and Apple will be working with HTML5 and competing. Competition leads to better products and lower prices which is always good for us consumers. 🙂

Tips To Install Windows 7/Vista Using Bootable USB Flash Drive Or Hard Disk

Tips To Install Windows 7/Vista Using Bootable USB Flash Drive Or Hard Disk

Sometimes you might need to install Windows Vista/ Windows 7 into a computer system that does not possesses a DVD drive. Or you might not like to spend time on installing Windows Vista/ Windows 7 via DVD media disc on a remote system where you can actually install the OS without a need of burning to DVD disk on a local PC which has the ISO file saved.

In any case if you feel that it is not possible to install Windows Vista/ Windows 7 via a DVD, it is possible that you install it from a Portable hard disk (HD) or USB drive. You can use Portable HD drive or a USB flash drive like an operating system installer. Moreover, the time taken to install an OS from Portable HD drive or a USB flash drive is lesser as compared to installing OS using DVD-ROM disc.

For using an external Portable HD/ USB flash drive to install Windows Vista/ Windows 7, you need to first make the Portable HD/USB flash drive bootable and copy the installation setup files for Windows Vista/ Windows 7. Use the below mentioned procedure.

Basic requirements for installing OS from Portable HD/ USB flash drive are mentioned as follows:

  • The motherboard of the target PC should be able to boot up using a USB device. You can check this support by going to BIOS.
  •  A Portable HD or a USB flash drive with a free space of 4GB or more.
  • Windows 7/ Vista ISO image.
  • An existing system running a Windows Vista/ Windows 7 OS.

Procedure to Format the Portable Hard Disk / USB Flash Drive

You need to format the Portable Hard Disk/USB Flash Drive in NTFS format using the built-in Format utility in Windows Explorer. Once formatted, you need to use diskmgmt.msc (Disk Management) for marking and activating the partition.

You may also use the command-line utility “diskpart” by following the below mentioned steps.

  • Go to command prompt with admin rights.
  • Run the DiskPart utility by using the command “diskpart”.
  • Check the number of the USB drive (Disk ###) by typing the command “list disk”.
  • If your system has only one hard disk and no other USB drives are plugged in, the disk number will be shown as Disk 1.

Important Tip: In case you have partitioned your Portable Hard Disk/ USB Flash Drive, you need to use the command “list volume” instead of “list disk” for selecting the volume number.

  • Now, you need to format your Portable Hard Disk/ USB Flash Drive with the commands mentioned below one after the other. “#” in the commands needs to be replaced with actual disk number. These commands will remove all the data from the Portable Hard Disk/ US
  • Flash Drive.

select disk #

create partition primary

select partition 1

format fs=NTFS

You need to note that if you find errors when you create primary partition, you need to simply add size=4000 (i.e. 4.0GB) after the command “create partition primary”. For instance, “create partition primary size=4000”.

Important Tip: In case you have already portioned the Portable Hard Disk/ USB Flash Drive and do not want to format it again, you may use the command “select volume #” in order to choose the partition that you wish to activate. You can determine volume number by using the tip mentioned in Step no. 4.

You need to skip the first four commands mentioned in step no. 5 and continue from the command “active”. You may also skip the command “format fs=NTFS” in case the partition is already empty.

  • Leave the command prompt open as you would need it in the next procedure.

Procedure to make your Portable Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive bootable

A disk can be made bootable by various different ways. One of the methods is by using bootsect utility which is present in installation disc or DVD ISO of Windows 7 and Vista.

  • Insert the installation disc or DVD ISO of Windows 7 and Vista into the DVD drive. In case you have the DVD ISO image only, mount it to a virtual DVD/CD-ROM drive which is powered by virtual drive program. The Virtual drive functions pretty much in a similar manner as a physical CD or DVD drive, but it works virtually in the OS.
  • Now go to command prompt and switch to DVD’s boot directory of the OS using the command mentioned below:

            cd x:\boot

In this command, “x” needs to be replaced with CD/DVD drive letter.

  • Install the boot instructions by using the command “bootsect /nt60 y:” and set USB drive as bootable NTFS drive. Replace “y” in the command with real drive letter of your Portable Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive.
  • Exit the command prompt.

Important Tip: In case your system possesses a disk image utility like PowerISO or WinISO, you may use it to write the entire ISO image of Windows 7 and Vista into the selected partition. In such a situation, you can bypass the procedure to make the USB bootable. You also do not need to copy the DVD contents over to the USB.

Procedure to transfer the set up and installation files of Windows 7/Vista from DVD to Portable USB Drive.

You can copy all the contents from the DVD or ISO t of Windows 7/ Vista onto the USB drive by using Windows Explorer.  You may also go for various file copy tools or just extract the ISO onto the USB drive. For instance, you may use the command “xcopy x:\*.* /s /e /f y:\ for copying the contents of the DVD to the USB.

In the above command,” x:” needs to be replaced by DVD disc/image letter and y:  has to be replaced by USB drive path.

Your Portable Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive is ready for installing Windows 7/Vista. To start with the installation process, you need to reboot the destination PC and enter the BIOS. The boot priority needs to be changed from DVD/ hard disk to USB. You need to then insert the Portable Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive into the USB port of the system and boot up the PC.

The trick mentioned above works with 32-bit (x86) as well as 64-bit (x64) Windows 7 and Vista. In case you have a 32-bit Windows OS but wish to prepare a 64-bit (x64) Windows 7/ Vista  USB-based installer, you can run a 64-bit bootsect.exe from a 32-bit (x86) environment.

All you need to do is, simply use the x86 Windows 7/ Vista  disk while using the command boot sect, before copying the contents of X64 Windows 7/ Vista  DVD to the Portable Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive.

However, you may also use DVD/USB Download Tool for creating a bootable USB drive for installation of Windows 7 through USB.
