Samsung – Microsoft Conflict Over Android Phone Manufacturing – Will The End Users Suffer ?

Microsoft Imposed Royalty Fees on Samsung for Manufacturing Android Based Hardwares

Undeniably, Microsoft has incredible reputation in manufacturing computers and IT industry. The Windows operating system by Microsoft is almost reining the IT industry. However, few of the other giant players such as Google has launched their Smartphone in the market and most of the mobile phone manufacturing companies have started producing Android based devices.

Microsoft has also made its presence felt in Smartphone section with its Windows Mobile phone running on windows operating system. Samsung deals with both the companies respectively, but the sale of the Android OS based Smartphone has increased tremendously, which has made the producer increase the production of phone running on this operating system.

This has come as a setback to Microsoft and they have imposed royalty fees on Samsung. Now let us get some insight on events happening between Microsoft and Samsung, and more:

What’s happening between Microsoft and Samsung?

  • Microsoft has taken a decision to impose royalty charge of 15$ on each of the Samsung Android based mobile phones.
  • Samsung has requested to cut down or lower down this royalty penalty from 15$ to 10$. It is currently being considered by the Microsoft, but they haven’t gone really public about their reconsideration on the loyalty fees as yet.
  • Microsoft has taken this step on the grounds of Patent troll activity or patent infringement. They argue that Samsung has misused its patent by under-manufacturing Windows mobile phone according to the volume as agreed. Samsung has also been accused of misusing the patent rights, in order to get a grip on bigger market shares.

What are the factors and facts behind Microsoft’s BIG decision to charge Samsung ?

  • Most of the people believe that Microsoft has wrongly filed a lawsuit against Samsung and used the advantage of being the most reputed company in the industry. People also think that the main reason behind charging a huge amount of royalty fee on each mobile phone is only to get back at the rival company.
  • There is another partners of Microsoft such as HTC, who only pay 5 $ as the royalty charge.
  • Few market experts argue that Samsung is only manufacturing the android based Smartphone to meet high volume of public demand. However, Microsoft has a valid reason to charge them with the royalty fee or have Samsung completely stop the manufacturing of android be smart phones.
  • The experts also conclude that this could be one of the reasons through which Microsoft is trying to win the market by eliminating their competitors.

How right is Microsoft ?

Critics are objecting Microsoft forcing Samsung to pay $15 huge on each android based hardware. They also state that it is unfair to penalize Samsung under the act of Patent Troll. It is very clear that Samsung deals with both companies and manufactures devices having two different operating systems. However, it is fortunate for Samsung that the android based mobile phones are high in demand. Microsoft must review and revise their terms and conditions before they could reasonably file a lawsuit against the partner company.

10 New Features Of The iOS 5

News of the upcoming iOS 5 is quickly spreading like a digital wildfire especially since the Worldwide Developers Conference early this June. At the conference Apple discussed the top 10 out of the 200 new features that the iOS 5 would bring this fall. There is a lot of speculation that Apple’s updates and improvements have taken some of the ideas from the popular jailbreak program Cydia, and also some ideas from the Android phones. To find out let’s look at the 10 features that were discussed so far:

1 ) No more cord– This new feature will come as a great relief to Apple users. No more having to hook your Apple device up to a computer to activate it and use it. Seems like a slight improvement, but in reality this will benefit a lot of people. This initial hook up to activate has been a big hassle for people who own Apple devices but lack a desktop or laptop computer.

2) Wireless In-Home Synchronization– Instead of having to hook your device up to your computer and back up your apps and music, now every time your Apple device is hooked up to a power source it will start wirelessly syncing all of your data.

3) iCloud is here– Finally cloud services have been brought to mobile devices. This new service will be great for people who have multiple computers and mobile devices and don’t want to keep downloading all their info to each device. Best of all its free!

4) iMessage– A revolutionary feature that threatens to take the messaging services from the hands of cell phone carriers and put it into a free feature included solely for the iOS 5 users. This could significantly reduce cell phone bills and make it possible for users to eliminate their messaging service completely from their bill. This feature is an excellent inclusion especially since people continuously get ripped off by texting packages.

5) Revamped lock screen– The old Apple products used to have a rather annoying lock feature. When you needed to access your camera fast and see messages fast, you had to completely unlock the phone then find the icon in your menu. Now, however, on the lock screen there is a quick button for the phone and for messages making it possible to catch almost everything on camera at the touch of a simple button.

6) iTunes 10.3– A handy update to iTunes pleases consumers. Before if you lost a song you downloaded on iTunes, or you got a new device and needed to fill it up with all of your music, you couldn’t redownload songs for free. Now, however, you can. With the iTunes features incorporated with the iCloud features you can download any of your music as many times as you want, from any iOS device.

7) Tabs in Safari– When you wanted a new webpage open you generally had to open up a whole new page and when you went back to the page it would reload making it slow and annoying. Now Apple has sped up the process by making tabs available that don’t reload unless you direct them to.

8 ) Reminder App– Due to the heavy use of reminder apps Apple finally realized that it is a necessity for most people and decided to incorporate it in their new iOS 5. The neat feature about their reminder app is that it is location specific so if you needed to pick up milk at the store while you were out when you hit the store your Apple device would alert you that you need milk.

9) Twitter– Of course with increasing popularity of Twitter, Apple decided to have a built in Twitter that lets users tweet instantly and even send photos directly to Twitter from their photos app. They can also send map details from web pages and link your contacts directly to their Twitter accounts.

10) News has arrived– for those who love to read newspapers and magazines this will be a welcome feature. Newsstand allows you to pick which magazines and newspapers you want to receive and they will update automatically. This is a slightly different version of the iBooks.

Some excellent new features coming out this fall for Apple users. The best thing about the new iOS 5 is that it will allow people with older iPhone models and iPad models to utilize it as well, rather than just shutting them out. Not everything was updated, there are still a few issues that Apple critics would have liked to see fixed with the updated OS, but nonetheless these features will be an amazing step forward for Apple users.

Fix Phone Memory Card – It Doesn’t Show Up In The Mobile

Use Simple Registry Tricks To Solve SD Memory Card Disappearance Issue In Windows Mobile PCC Device

Windows Mobile Smartphone or PPC (Pocket PC) phone is an interesting fully-functional device that offers every advantage of a standalone PPC along with telephony components for data and voice communication via Wireless WAN (Wide Area Network).

These mobile smartphone devices by Windows accept an external Secure Digital (SD) memory card in order to increase the storage memory space allowing the user to store ample of data and applications, especially programs like GPS navigation device which normally consume huge memory space.

However it has been noticed that, sometimes when the smartphone device resumes from sleep or suspend state, the Secure Digital memory card that was inserted into its card slot gets disappeared or does not get detected instantly, even though the SD card was working fine just some moments ago.

Occasionally, the SD card does appear in the folder tree of File Explorer but indicates that there is no free memory space, or sometimes data on the card seems to be corrupt thereby causing the entire device to hang and stop responding to programs (like camera) which attempt to access, read or write from the SD card. As another symptom, no files/ data is seen within the directories.

A simple way to resolve or fix the problem is to eject and re-insert the SD card into the slot again. Once reinserted, Windows smartphone device will detect the SD card and make it visible again. But doing this each time the SD card disappears is quite troublesome and annoying.

Also, the smartphone device might assume that the user has inserted a new memory card, besides the original one, thereby creating a folder by the name “Storage Card2? so as to represent the new card (which is actually the same original “SDMMC” card) causing all shortcuts and links to break.

This issue possibly arises as the chipset configuration for SD card is not compatible with either ROM (Read Only Memory) or card reader of the device.

It is reported that Japan-made SD memory cards (like MiniSD and MicroSD) which utilize Toshiba chipset (some Kingston brand models) are more compatible with a majority of Windows Mobile devices as compared to Taiwan made SD cards (some Crucial brand models)

However to sort out the issue, you may upgrade the firmware ROM or OS, replace the handset or change to a superior quality SD card. If none of these options are feasible, you can use the below mentioned registry trick as a workaround.

1. Run Registry Editor (For e.g. CeRegEditor or Registry Editor).
2. Navigate to the below mentioned registry keys and alter the value data of the registry entries consequently.

[HKLM\System\StorageManager]“PNPUnloadDelay“=dword:8196

[HKLM\System\StorageManager]“PNPWaitIODelay“=dword:8196

You need to enter “8196” as a DECIMAL. The HEX (HEXADECIMAL) equivalent for it is 0×00002004.

As stated by Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN), “PNPUnloadDelay” specifies the time delay (usually in milliseconds) amidst unmounting and detaching an unavailable device. PNPUnloadDelay forms the base for PNPWaitIODelay.

PNPWaitIODelay specifies the waiting time before trying an input/output operation on the unavailable device (like SD card) and by default has a value which is three times the PNPUnloadDelay value.

By default, both the registry keys possess lower values, 1500 or 4096 which corresponds to shorter waiting time. This possibly causes the device to assume that the card is removed when it resumes from suspend/ sleep state.

However, if the above mentioned registry trick does not solve the SD card disappearance error issue, you can also try to disable “sleep mode” setting on the card. In order to do so, you need to change the registry key mentioned below for turn off or disabling the Power Management feature for the SD card.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Class\SDMemory_Class]

“DisablePowerManagement“=dword:00000001

After you change the registry keys, just soft reset the device to ensure that the Secure Digital (SD) card disappearance issue has been resolved.
