Difference Between WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

WordPress is the top blogging site on the internet and has almost 60 million users! In fact, you are currently reading a blog hosted on wordpress open source CMS right now!

WordPress is a unique (and free) open source CMS (content management system) that is used by millions as an application to publish their blog. WordPress utilizes PHP and MySQL and can be altered depending on which WordPress you use.

One of the biggest confusion for newbies is the difference between ‘two types‘ of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org . When it comes to setting up your blog site you need to carefully examine the features of each of these before you continue as they have striking differences.

WordPress.com

The basic difference between WordPress.com and WordPress self hosted solution (downloadable from WordPress.org) is that your blog will be hosted on the servers provided by WordPress (an organization started and run by Matt and wordpress is free) and you can enjoy all of the preset templates, easy to use control panel, and efficient blogging tools as you create your own site. Below is a list of the main pro’s and con’s for WordPress.com:

Pros

  • Free and easy to set up with tutorials and guides available.
  • WordPress automatically backs up your blogs, updates itself, guards against spam, and has a secure login.
  • You host on WordPress servers which is much easier since you don’t have to maintain it.
  • WordPress uses hundreds of servers so your blog will likely never go down.
  • You can get additional traffic from various features on WordPress such as ‘blogs of the day’ and more.

Cons

  • You can’t install plugins (plugins are an EXTREMELY useful tool and add limitless customization and personalization).
  • You have to pay a significant amount of money for a ‘premium’ account.
  • Your domain name will be a sub-domain, so the URL will look something like : <subdomain>.wordpress.com , which may not suit you if you are planning to start the blog for official / professional intent.
  • And yeah, you cannot have ads on the site, not even Google Adsense.

WordPress.org

The downloadable WordPress package from WordPress.org is for people who are a bit more technically savvy and have their own means of hosting. It is generally used by people who want a successful site and plan on using ads, and a lot of customization instead of the standard blog. Take a look at the pros and cons below:

Pros

  • You are able to download Plugins! These are an incredibly useful feature as they can literally have ANY function!
  • Limitless customization opportunities with downloadable themes, ability to completely create your own theme, and plugins that can add buttons, forums, and even customize each page.
  • You can use your own domain and rid yourself of the annoying ‘WordPress.com’ brand.

Cons

  • You have to host your site yourself which generally cost anywhere between $5-$12 a month or more.
  • You have to back up your blog and manage all of it yourself without the aide of WordPress
  • If you have a high traffic site then your private server might not be enough to handle it and will crash.
  • If you have no skill with computers and applications like WordPress you will likely mismanage your blog and it will fail.

As you can see there are significant differences between both WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Each one maintains strong positive features but you, as the user, need to identify your specific needs and choose one wisely. Whichever you decide will limit your blog in certain ways which could be good or bad.

YouTube iFrame Disappears When Embedded In WordPress

Back in July 2010, YouTube announced a new way to embed videos on your websites. But unfortunately, I’ve always faced problems while trying to embed videos in my WordPress posts.

Try this:

1> Go to any YouTube video.

2> Get the Embed code (which will be wrapped up in <iframe> — </iframe>),

3> Paste the code in your WordPress HTML, switch to Visual mode and switch back to HTML mode. You’ll notice that the entire YouTube code will be missing :).

Currently I’m using version 3.1.2 build and this problem still persists. I’m not sure if this has something to do with WordPress or iframes.

Solution: Workaround for this problem

The simplest work around for this problem is, instead of embedding YouTube code wrapped up in iframes, use the old embed code.

1> Click on “Share” –> and then on “Embed”. By default, you’ll notice the code wraped in iframe:

2> Scroll a little down and you’ll notice a couple of options and one of them will be : “Use old embed code” and you’ll see the code will change.

After making your selection, copy and paste the embed code from the text box and you’ll notice results as per your selection.

Use Collapsing Ad Unit In Google Adsense To Hide The Public Service Ads (PSA)

Use Collapsing Ad Unit In Google Adsense To Hide The Public Service Ads (PSA)

Google AdSense is a massive online advertising network. For each ad space inventory, it has highest fill rate. The fill rate is based on visitors from North America, US or Europe and global traffic.

Sometimes it is also possible that when AdSense crawler checks the webpage, it may fail to find any related ad to display. In such situations Google AdSense Public Service Ad, which is usually called as PSA, is displayed until an alternate URL for ad is specified.

There is one more choice for the bloggers, webmasters or publishers when there is no alternative ad that is available for display. When an alternative advertisement is not present to display, the ad space is filled by a solid color (by using google_alternate_color JavaScript variable). In some cases a public service ads will be displayed, but it is not be paid for the clicks anyway. In such conditions a choice for collapsing ad unit is offered by Google AdSense.

Collapsing the ad unit is an advanced feature which is optional for the alternative ads. This feature has a code for collapsing ad unit which will ‘collapse’ the ad unit. The feature allows you to minimize an unused, blank or un-monetizing space which would be replaced by using alternate colors.

The activities of collapsing ad unit works only on the websites that are hosted on their own servers by own domains or subdomains. It works on those websites which are able to allow remote or console access (remote access is possible via SFTP or FTP, SSH or Telnet).

The main reason for this is because some a script file must be uploaded and then hosted on each domain and sub-domain locations. After this to implement the collapsing ad the location is referenced by the alternate ad URL. So this feature cannot be utilized by users of blogspot.com, Blogsome.com, WordPress.com and etc.

Follow the steps given below to collapse the add unit.

  • Download the collapsing ad units file and right click on link Here ‘Save Target as…’: google_adsense_script.html.
  • Upload the file google_adsense_script.html on a domain to any location for applying the collapsing ad unit. The location of the file exists on the similar domain with the webpages so that it is not so important. The HTML file is necessary for multiple domains or subdomains.
  • Then login to your AdSense account.
  • Go to AdSense Setup and click on Manage Ads. Then go to Edit Ad Settings of the ad unit so as to apply the collapsing on no ad instances.
  • Go to “More options” section and select on the tab named as “Show non-Google ads from another URL”. Enter the unchanged and full path to the collapsing ad units HTML file which is present on your domain.

When you add an alternate URL pointing to the collapsing script on the ad unit code, the ad unit will disappear when there is no targeted ad available. All he unused add units are appeared as empty, transparent boxes in Internet Explorer 5.0 or lower version.

Below is another code which is provided for the users who can not transfer or upload the HTML file to the web server. You can use the code if you have console access and able to Telnet or SSH into host.

First of all, create a new google_adsense_script.html with the help of VI (which is present on the web root directory of server). Then copy and paste the content given below:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN”
“http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd “>
<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xml:lang=”en” lang=”en”>
<head>
<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=iso-8859-1? />
<title></title>
<script src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/google_adsense_script.js” type=”text/javascript”></script>
</head>
<body style=”background-color: transparent;”>
</body>
</html>
